Generous Spirit
jason is a guy you can count on to always tell you the truth. he's direct and he doesn't put up with nonsense from anyone. but one of his most admirable qualities is much less obvious -- his generous spirit. during law school, he always seemed to have a minute for everyone and everything despite his crazy class schedule. (seriously, do you know anyone else who managed to get both their JD and their MBA in three years???). but perhaps he best exemplified generosity to me when he housed me and five of my friends on a last minute roadtrip to palmyra. i called him at 5:30 on a friday evening as i was picking up the rental car. and still, jason was happy to welcome me and five strangers into his home. we arrived at 3 in the morning to find everything prepared for us: beds made up with fresh sheets; new towels laid out. and the next morning, he was the perfect, gracious, friendly, smiling host complete with orange juice and doughnuts. jason is a wonderful person. and although his presence here on earth will be missed, i'm certain he's busy preparing everything in heaven. and when we all see him again, he'll still be the same smiling friend -- possibly even with orange juice and doughnuts.

Gracious, friendly, competent
Jason took me to Red Iguana for lunch in September 2007. He was so gracious and friendly and so competent. He is an impressive man.

Jason's Sense of Humor
Jason sent the following email to the BYULaw2003 email list on January 4, 2007:
This is Jason Coles. I married Laurie Seal. We moved back to Utah, and we just moved to Park City. Anyway, Laurie took a job with Holme Roberts and I took a job as in-house counsel/private attorney for a uber-successful entrepenuer. I have to take the Utah bar in Feb. I work from home, have no billables, and don't miss life as an associate at the six-hundred attorney New York mega-law firm I used to work for.
As for a story to top Tennyey's, here is a funny. I was in Justice Court helping a buddy out of a speeding ticket when a defendant was brought in front of Judge Odorisi (old Italian guy). The defendant had a huge bandage over his eye, and it looked like he had been beat up. The Judge said, "Oh my, what happened to you, did you get in a fight?" And the defendant said, "No, I have an eye infection." The Judge said, "Oh, I'm sorry to hear that, but please be sure you don't touch anything on the way out."

What a life to celebrate!!
From Janell Felsted Waters:
I am going to do another post later today, but I have a very vivid memory talking to Jason at my carrel during what would have been the first semester of the 2L year. We were chatting about who knows what when Laurie walked up. During the short conversation, Jason managed to wrangle a bet with Laurie that if he won the bet, she would go out with him. I don’t know what happened with the bet, but I do remember the gleam in Jason’s eye as she walked away, and he said “she is the best kept secret of this law school.” After I heard about their marriage I have thought of that conversation several times, and recognized that “gleam” in Jason’s eye as his determination to succeed.
It is very difficult to refer to Jason in the past – so I am just going to state how things are in my mind right now. Jason is the kind of person who knows what he wants. He is the kind of person that achieves any goal he sets for himself. I am grateful I had the chance to get to know him during my three semesters at BYU and am very grateful that we had gotten back in touch over the last year or two.
